Choosing a Med-Psych program

Postby Guest » Wed Jul 14, 2004 1:47 pm

Webmaster, I could use some advice on applying to residency. I am an M4 at the U of Iowa and I would like to do either Psych or Med-Psych. Naturally I am applying to Iowa, but I would like to know which other med-psych programs out there are strong. In particular, Rush, UConn, Tulane, and UVA. Also is there a way to know whether or not I am a strong candidate for application? The Frieda website lacks some of those details.
Thanks

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of information about the other med-psych programs at this time, as I've been out of the loop for a few years. The people with the best perspective are probably those who have interviewed recently - I did my rounds of interviews around 9 years ago now.

I did make some comments in this thread: med-psych residency program information

Rush's program is probably pretty strong now - as they have a full program and some med-psych docs who have stayed on as faculty (and a recently acquired one from outside). I don't know much about Tulane's program, aside from knowing their residency director who did the program there and he seems very good to work with. UVA used to have one of the best programs, but I believe their program has not been that strong over the past 5+ years - they had an excellent medicine program, but I don't think the two departments had gotten along that well together. I don't know anything about UConn - didn't even know they had a program.

As for knowing if you are a strong applicant - I'd basically say that if you are good enough to match in the more competitive department of a program (usually the medicine department), then you are probably good enough to match in the combined program. A lot can vary from year to year, though, as there are so few spots at each program.
